Markus Lukacevic is researching how wood waste can be turned into a multifunctional material as part of the Christian Doppler Laboratory ‘Wood-based biocomposite of the next generation’, which he heads.
One of the most important challenges of the 21st century is to use sustainable materials wherever possible. This also applies to the construction industry. As a renewable and CO2-binding resource, wood is playing an increasingly important role here. However, current wood processing methods only deliver a yield of around 50%. This percentage is reduced even further by further processing steps up to the finished construction.
